This week in Kindergarten S.T.E.A.M., we have done a little something different from using the computers. Since Kindergarten is busily learning how written numbers can represent real objects, we took some time to make number sentences (such as 3+5=8) into stories!
Practicing the "telling" of a number sentence helps make the connections between numbers as representative symbols and the concepts they communicate. So much of real world math is about answering a question involving amounts (ie: If I buy 8 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, how much will that cost? And...IF I buy those 8 boxes of cookies, do I have enough money left in my monthly budget for going to the movies?). Give your child real math problems to solve as you go about your day. Not only will you build connections, but you will be developing a math thinker! Ideas for math "conversations": Your cousins are coming for lunch on Saturday. How many more plates will we need for the table? You usually spend 10 minutes cleaning your room, but tonight, you only need to clean for 5 minutes. How many fewer minutes is that? If everyone wants 2 eggs for breakfast, how many eggs do we need altogether? (Notice a trend? Math doesn't seem so scary when it's tied to food!)

Thank you for checking out the Kindergarten blog! Here, Ms. Dell will update you with the skills we are working on in the S.T.E.A.M. Lab.
In addition to the typing sites listed on the Tech for Families page, here are a few others, especially for younger students.
Big Brown Bear: bigbrownbear.co.uk/learntotype/ Use any of the 3 typing games listed down the side, but it is suggested that you start with the Keyboard Game, followed by the Typing Game, and finally finish up with the 3-D Keyboard. Bees & Honey: www.tvokids.com/games/beesandhoney This is the first website I use with the Kindergarteners. The focus of this site is on mouse control skills, including moving the mouse to hover over an object, mastering "left click" to select an object, and finally adding "drag and drop" skills. Continuing to practice this site at home helps build eye-hand coordination as well! |
