This week in Kindergarten S.T.E.A.M., we have done a little something different from using the computers. Since Kindergarten is busily learning how written numbers can represent real objects, we took some time to make number sentences (such as 3+5=8) into stories!
Practicing the "telling" of a number sentence helps make the connections between numbers as representative symbols and the concepts they communicate. So much of real world math is about answering a question involving amounts (ie: If I buy 8 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, how much will that cost? And...IF I buy those 8 boxes of cookies, do I have enough money left in my monthly budget for going to the movies?). Give your child real math problems to solve as you go about your day. Not only will you build connections, but you will be developing a math thinker! Ideas for math "conversations": Your cousins are coming for lunch on Saturday. How many more plates will we need for the table? You usually spend 10 minutes cleaning your room, but tonight, you only need to clean for 5 minutes. How many fewer minutes is that? If everyone wants 2 eggs for breakfast, how many eggs do we need altogether? (Notice a trend? Math doesn't seem so scary when it's tied to food!)
